Canvas Course Checklist for Faculty
OVERVIEW
Prior to the first day of classes, make sure to check the following items in each of your courses! You may have done some or all of these items already: they could have been configured automatically when you import content from a previous course, and others we configure for you.
CHECKLIST
Items you NEED to check:
-
Update your Course Navigation Menu so that only specific items are visible such as Syllabus, Modules, Assignments, Grades, Quizzes, etc. Hide items you won't use, like "Office 365", BigBlueButton, etc.
-
If you cross-listed any courses, make sure to change the course name to be inclusive of all blocks (“CS1 - A Block” can be renamed to “CS1 - A/B Blocks” to show it includes students in B block too).
-
IMPORTANT: Enable the default Course Grading Scheme and choose the MA 50-Point Scale as the default scheme.
- Change the Default Due Time for assignments to something that makes sense for your course/during the school day. (Settings > Course Details)
-
Double check your gradebook settings. Check the boxes for “Hide totals in student grades summary” and “Hide grade distribution graphs from students”.
-
Change your grade posting policy to "manually post grades". This gives you flexibility around when students see grades and comments you post. Your Course > Grading > Gear Icon > Grade Posting Policy tab.
-
Publish the content you want visible to students on day 1 (e.g. specific or all: modules, pages, assignments, etc.).
-
Confirm your homepage is set when pressing the home button. If it’s not set, go to Pages and set a "front page".
-
Publish your Course! (“Publish” button on the homepage)!
-
…..and finally, Review your course in Student View. On the homepage press the "Student View" button. Does everything look and act how you want it to?
Optional items that are nice to have for some folks:
-
Create a nickname for your course on your dashboard.
-
Star your courses in the Courses > All Courses menu. Unstar old courses. (starred courses show up in your dashboard)
-
Add a picture for your course that appears for the course on the dashboard.
-
Enable Pronto by going to this link (you don’t have to email Kyle anymore). Your course(s) must be published first.
