If you are a person who has students complete assignments using Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, you might be able to improve the creation, submission, and feedback process for students by making a small change to how you create assignments in Canvas.
Instead of having students manually create a copy of a Google Doc, manually change the share-settings, or mess around with the different options for Canvas submissions, you can simply use Google Assignments (LTI 1.3).
Pros
Cons
- Automatically create student copies from an assignment template. These copies are:
- Named with the assignment title and student name
- Organized in both the student's and your Google Drive
- Shared with you for commenting and editing
- View student work and provide formative feedback while students are still working on their assignments.
- Use with Canvas SpeedGrader and Canvas Rubrics!
- Use Google Originality reports (5 per semester)
- Doesn't require students to organize and name their files in their own Google Drive- reducing opportunities to learn an important technological habit.
- Sometimes takes a moment to load on Canvas.
- A new process for turning in assignments.

How-To
- Create a new assignment in Canvas and select External Tool as the Submission Type.
- Click Find and then scroll down and select Google Assignments (LTI 1.3).
-
Do not select Google Drive Cloud Assignment. This is an old version of the Google integration and doesn't work in a very intuitive or clear way.
- Confirm that you are logging in with the correct Google account and click Continue.
- A pop-up window will open. Make sure that the Canvas Speedgrader option is selected.
- Double check that you have done this because you cannot change the option once you have created the assignment.
- Selecting Google Assignments will force you to use the Google Assignments interface for grading, comments, and rubrics.
- In the Files section, either Attach an existing Google Doc, Slide, or Sheet as an assignment template or click Create to create a new assignment template. Each student will get a copy of this template when they open the assignment.
