Using Turnitin on Canvas
You have two options when using Turnitin on Canvas. Both are already set up and available to you!
- Use the Turnitin Plagiarism Framework
- Use the external tool version of Turnitin
So... how do you choose?
Realistically, the Turnitin Plagiarism Framework is probably going to be your best bet because it integrates much more easily and smoothly into Canvas given how the majority of people here at MA use assignments and rubrics.
But, if you are curious, you can see a comparison between the two options in this image.
Turnitin Plagiarism Framework
- Create an assignment (or edit an existing assignment) and select Online as your Submission Type.
- Choose Text Entry and/or File Uploads in the Online Entry Options section. You still choose other options or have your students submit via Google Drive but you must select one of the two options above for the next section to work!
- A Plagiarism Review section will appear! Select the Turnitin-v2 option.
- If you get the image below, it likely because you are trying to turn on Plagiarism Review for an existing assignment that was already due. Solve the issue by simply temporarily changing the Due Date of the assignment on Canvas.

- A bunch of options for customization will appear. Select the desired options and continue on choosing your other assignment options. See here for more information on these settings!
