Set up the Canvas Gradebook for Both Gradeless and Graded Students in the Same Course
Do you teach a class that has both gradeless and graded students in it? To set up your Canvas gradebook to accommodate these two different needs, you have a couple of extra steps to follow:
- Create different sections for your graded and gradeless students.
- Add each student to the relevant section.
- Create your assignment and set it up to be graded with points (or however you want).
- Create a duplicate of this assignment and change the grading section so that it is set up to be graded for completion.
Create Different Sections for Graded and Gradeless Students
- Go to the relevant Canvas course and click Settings > Sections.
- In the Add a New Section box, create a section called 10th Grade. Click the +Section button.
- Create another new section, this time called 9th Grade.
Add Each Student to the Relevant Section
- Go to the People tab of your course.
- For each student, click the Vertical Ellipses and select Edit Sections.
- Add the student to the relevant section based on their graduation year. Click Update.
Create the Graded Version of the Assignment and Assign
- Create the assignment and set up the grading so that it matches your grading structure for your graded students.
- In the Assign Access section, click Manage Due Dates and Assign To.
- In the sidebar, assign this graded assignment to your graded section of students.
Duplicate, Update to Gradeless, and Assign
- Go to the Assignments tab and find the assignment you just created.
- Click Vertical Ellipses and select Duplicate.
- Open the assignment you just created and make edits so that is is gradeless.
- In the Assign Access section, click Manage Due Dates and Assign To.
- In the sidebar, assign this gradeless assignment to your gradeless section of students.
