TROUBLESHOOTING
Here are the most common solutions to issues with AppleTVs and Airplay at MA.
1- AppleTV not showing up in the list of available mirroring options
- Make sure the AppleTV is ON. If it's off, it doesn't announce it's presence. Find the remote and press the power button to turn it on. You should see the white light turn on on the front face.
- Make sure your machine is connected to MA-Staff. Turn off wireless and then turn it back on to verify your connected to the closest/strongest access point.
- Reboot your computer AND the AppleTV (see below for instructions). Either system can lock up and refuse connections while still appearing to be working.
- Make sure Bluetooth is ON. AppleTV connections require it.
2 - Video\Audio is choppy
- Reboot your laptop. Especially if it's been more than 5 days since your last.
- Close Zoom, Mail, Adobe CC, or any other application that uses a lot of bandwidth. Backup programs may also be running in the background, look at your task bar for activity.
- Plug into Ethernet (if available). If it's not available in your classroom and this is a common issue, request a cabled solution from techsupport@ma.org .
3 - Audio not working for Netflix/Prime/other apps (This has been set as the default for all systems as of Summer 2023)
- Go to the AppleTV settings
- Video and Audio > Audio Format > Change Format
- Confirm the option to Change Format
- Scroll down to New Format, and change the setting to "Stereo"
- Click the back arrow to exit/save the setting.
- Try the App in question again. If you still do not have sound, restart the AppleTV by going to Settings > System > Restart
Powering ON the device
Unlike the previous generation of AppleTV, these ones have a power button on the remote. Use the power button (top-right)to wake it up, the other buttons may not wake it up.

Connecting to Airplay
Starting in Monterey, the Airplay button moved into the control center area. Simply click the icon that looks like two mini-horizontal switches and then click Screen Mirroring. The list of available Apple TVs will show up.

Pro tip! You can drag the Screen Mirroring button out to your toolbar to save yourself a click in the future. Thanks goes to Anayansi for finding that!
Streaming content
If you want to show a movie in class, we highly recommend using one of the built-in apps on the AppleTV. This will avoid your computer having to both wirelessly download content and simultaneously upload that same content over the air to the AppleTV. We've pre-loaded many of the top content provider apps, though you will need to log in with your own IDs. You no longer need to sign-in using the remote! See the section below on using your iPhone or iPad to control the AppleTV.
For shorter Youtube videos, or content from elsewhere, you should be OK to just use your browser and Airplay. Let us know if you'd like any additional apps loaded on the AppleTVs by sending an email to techsupport@ma.org
Use for Audio only
You can send just audio to an AppleTV. Using the same Airplay steps from above, click the little icon to the right of the Sound menu (see Image2) and then choose the AppleTV from the list. You will need to enter the access code, so the projector will need to be on for at least that step.
Using your iPhone/iPad as a Remote
NOTE: Your iPhone/iPad must be on MA-Staff for this to work.
- Open Control Center (Swipe down from top right corner of the screen)
- Tap the remote icon at the bottom
- Select the TV you would like to control from the drop down menu at the top of your screen
- When asked, enter the 4-digit code shown on the AppleTV
- If you do not see the Remote as an option in Control Center:
- Go to Settings
- Select Control Center
- Tap the green ‘+’ next to the Apple TV Remote
